Parquetry – complete!
I know how much you all love the colour brown, so earlier in the year at the Uttoxeter show when Ange, Susan, Reene and Katy were making rude remarks about the largely brown traditional quilts, I decided to be subversive and declared I would make a contemporary brown quilt (sorry I still disagree with the use of the word Modern, as I believe we are technically in the Postmodern movement now).
The idea was that they would actually change their minds about brown, however I think they’re stuck in their stubborn ways still π Never mind, here is my finished quilt, Parquetry. It’s already been commissioned for a national magazine for next Autumn so nerrrr.
Β The quilting is FMQ and it was completely inspired by a conversation with Shevvy at the last East Mids meeting.
STATS
Size β Lap quilt – 38″ x 51″
Number of blocks β120 ish 3″ squares on point, plus setting triangles
Time to piece β About 6 hours I think
Time to quilt β 3 1/2 hours approx (home machine)
Fabric β A mixture- Michael Miller neon highlights plus some Joel Dewberry, Denyse Schmidt, Jenean Morrison,Β AlisonΒ Glass…
Backing Fabric β Half a single duvet cover off eBay
Binding Fabric β Sketch style print, machine bound
Threads β Aurifil 50wt really white, not sure of the number, all the way through.

That’s the first goal completed for the Finish Along this quarter!

I think that all colours can have some challenging tones so there are browns & there are browns & it also depends with what you put them.
You did good!

Personally, I like it! Will you bring it to show us in person or do you have to send it off?

Ha ha what Ange said – we are just jealous, have no forward vision and where you see ‘chocolate’ we just see ‘poop’!
HOWEVER I do own some decent brown, in teeny doses, Denyse Schmidt, Joel Dewberry and Lotta Jansdotta, which one day I will use, diluted with as many other colours as I can π

This is by far and away the best brown quilt I’ve ever seen. Congrats on your magazine commission π

Its fun and lovely. The quilting is great. I thought if a quilt was in a magazine you had to keep it all hush hush till the publication date. I am also hoping to change some minds about brown with my pickle dish quilt.

You’ve done so well to get it finished and all done, isn’t it a great feeling when you can tick something off the list!

Yay for the commission! You have some lovely browns in that quilt, but I still won’t be making an all brown quilt myself. Ange and Hadley would disown me!!!

i love that you made this! we all need to remember that someday we’ll be gagging on gray…and red & aqua…and magenta and mustard…and white white white (if we’re not already)! all colors have their days to shine in the mainstream…the important thing is that we create from our own minds and hearts and don’t worry about what anybody else thinks of it! (:

It just goes to show almost anything can be updated and find it’s place in contemporary quilting. I’m not much of a brown person, but I can appreciate the work you have done here.
